The Prussian military musician Gottfried Piefke (1815-1884) composed in 1864 during the German-Danish War on the occasion of the storm of the Prussian troops on the Dybbøl entrenchments, where Danish troops had set up for defense, two military marches: One is the Düppeler Sturmmarsch (Army March II, 185), the other, much more famous of the Düppeler Schanzen-Sturmmarsch (army march II, 186), which today is almost exclusivelyknown only as Düppeler Schanzen Marsch.
On the day of the attack, April 18, 1864, Piefke had the order to accompany the storm of the Prussian troops with cheering marching music. On this occasion, the Düppeler Schanzen storm march was performed for the first time. According to legend, a cannonball is said to have torn the baton from Piefke's hand, whereupon he is said to have continued to conduct with his sword.
The march uses the famous Prussian tattoo signal as a prelude and the song "Steh’ ich in finst’rer Mitternacht" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAAyl7vrK7A (text by Wilhelm Hauff), which tells the story of a lonely soldier who longs for home and family.
The Dybbøl entrenchments were a Danish weir system near Dybbøl in South Jutland. The German-Danish war (for the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein) was decided here. After several weeks of siege, the ten entrenchments were stormed by the Prussians under Prince Friedrich Karl on April 18, 1864.
The German-Danish war is considered the first of the three German wars of unification. After the German-Danish War (1864), the German War of 1866 (also known as the Prussian-Austrian War) and the Franco-German War (1870/71), a German nation-state emerged for the first time in history: the Prussian-dominated German Empire.
