With free mulch and lots of rocks available, the possibilities that arise around here work out rather well for us. Since our garden area consists of narrow raised beds and pathways, it's not an ideal place to grow sprawling, vining plants like Watermelons, Pumpkins, and some Winter Squash.
Since we have an area on our land cleared in case we ever build a house, it's important to keep that area "tamed," or it'll just grow back into a forest. Recently, I decided to mulch that area to suppress the growth and build soil, and I'll be adding some small raised beds in it too.
The small raised beds can be planted with things like watermelons, and then they can sprawl out over the mulch and cover the area. Eventually, if we do end up building there, the rocks can be gathered and used elsewhere and the mulch will have broken down a bit by then and can be used in a soil building project someone else on the property
We also plan on growing some Okra and Corn in this area, so we'll be getting two levels of food out of the space. In this video, I get the project started.
