Postal vote fraud allegations in Sligo cause request for deferment

A member of Sligo County Council has made an application to the Council to have this weekend’s local elections deferred, due to alleged fraud in relation to postal vote registration. Cllr Hubert Keaney says it’s ‘not appropriate’ to stage the election pending a Garda investigation into why there have been so many postal vote applications in the Ballymote-Tubbercurry area. He also claims the ‘disabled’ postal voter list is very questionable.

Sligo County Council has said that a total of 289 postal votes were issued for "physical illness or disability", with 252 of those in the Ballymote/Tubbercurry electoral area.

The council said that over 20 medical practitioners signed the relevant documentation for the applications received.
