New York Warriors (1991, PC)

New York Warriors (known as NY Warriors in North America) is a shoot'em up developed by Synergistic Software and published by British company Virgin Games. The PC port was probably only released in North America. The game also came out for Amiga, Amstrad CPC and ZX Spectrum. An Atari ST version is mentioned in the manual, but does not seem to have been released.

Over the course of the 80s, organized crime and synthetic drugs have brought down America, leading to the rise of a religious cult called The Church of the Third Coming (C3C), which gains more and more power through spreading crime and drugs. A resistance group which calls itself The Warriors has been founded to stop them. However, C3C have installed a nuclear warhead in the World Trade Center, threatening to detonate it unless all Warriors surrender. The Warriors send in two fighters in make their way into the WTC and dismantle the warhead.

The game is a top-down run-and-gun similar to Ikari Warriors. You walk though a vertically scrolling level until you reach the end. The screen does not scroll automatically, and you cannot go backwards in the sense that the screen does not scroll down again. There is no health bar, you die on one hit. There are extra weapons scattered throughout the levels, like a spread shot or explosive shots.
