The UK's education system discourages people taking up hard subjects like engineering, and continues to fawn over and throw money at the arts. Meanwhile, the UK has a severe shortage of engineers, and again is importing people instead of using their own.

This is deliberate, as the UK since the Industrial Revolution, has liked the arts over sciences, and shows in schools where anyone not into the arts is a "nerd" or "geek", and made to feel worthless for taking on hard subjects.
