Das Stundenglas - Deutsches Fahrtenlied/German Hiking Song + English translation
Ein Fahrtenlied aus der deutschen Jugendbewegung / A song of the German Youth Movement
Worte/lyrics: Walter Richter, Weise/music: Wolfang Preuß, 1970
Text:
Kaiser, König, Edelmann, die hielten es in der Hand;
Was heut oben ist, fällt morgen herab,
was jetzt blüht, liegt bald schon im Grab.

English translation:
White sand encased by glass, case and pewter.
Incessantly trickles dreams and hours away.
And as silently as the pillar of sand falls,
it counts the seconds of the world.
When its time is up, you turn it around again.
Emperor, king, nobleman, they held it in their hands;
their time is long gone, has run away with the sand.
Even turning around the hourglass again
does not undo what has happened,
because time is deaf and blind and only the sand runs and runs.
Don't be sad when the moment flees
the one is happy who sees the sunshine.
Some believe the golden age is long gone.
Nevertheless, joy and sorrow change every hour anew.
What is up today will fall down tomorrow
what is blooming now will soon be in the grave.
Because time leaves no choice, nothing matters to it.
Don't be sad, don't hold up the minutes
Row and love, everything takes its course.
Don't stare at the hourglass, day in, day out, spellbound.
Find the right balance yourself, welcome life.
Seize the day and seize the hour of the night,
be happy when love beckons to you.
One day the Grim Reaper will come and halt the hourglass.
