In this video I prepare an obscure compound, Cs2[BiI5]. The source for this prep comes from a Wikipedia article on cesium chloride which references an older Russian work. Apparently many years ago (and perhaps still today) the quantitative precipitation of cesium salts was used in analytical chemistry to identify various metals cations and oxycations. These days most analytical work in labs is done with very expensive instrumentation that most hobby chemists simply don't have access too. However, these older analytical techniques still work just as well today as they did in the past and can be a powerful addition to the amateur chemists analytical toolkit. Plus they are colorful and fun to make.
