Why Pentagon Cloud-Computing Contract Is a Huge Deal. By Naomi Nix. 4 de octubre de 2018 13:32 GMT-5.

"
The U.S. Defense Department is running a winner-take-all competition to choose a cloud-computing company to host its trove of information, perhaps including top national-security secrets, so that warfighters and military leaders can make data-driven decisions at "mission-speed." Amazon.com Inc., Microsoft Corp. and International Business Machines Corp. are among those vying for the multibillion-dollar contract. The Pentagon’s intention to award such a massive project to just one bidder has raised objections, and the prospect of a foreign country spying on the U.S. through the cloud, using manipulated hardware, stirs security worries.

Keeping up with quantum: The Pentagon’s JEDI contract. By Project Q Sydney|Applications, Quantum IR.

It is well known that quantum computing will transform the security of cyberspace within the coming decades, but an approach to countering this threat is not noted anywhere in the JEDI contract. There are certainly companies and researchers working on quantum-secure cryptography through applications such as quantum key distribution, and even some research into the creation of a quantum blockchain—potential solutions to the quantum computing security threat.
Surprisingly, however, these are not areas toward which the DoD seems to be looking.

If the Pentagon doesn’t start thinking about how emerging technologies will interact, it could miss its best opportunity to secure U.S. military secrets for the future. Next month, bidding will close on the multi-billion contract to move military IT systems to the cloud, the so-called Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI). But while the Pentagon focuses on the security benefits of one emerging technology – cloud computing – it is ignoring the accompanying threat of another: quantum hacking.
