Talvisota (English: Winter war) was the invasion of Finland by the Soviet Union in November 1939. The Finns were badly outmatched, twice by infantry and over a hundred times by tanks and aircraft. The Finns however put up a stiff resistance, capitalising on Soviet lack of training as much of their leadership had been purged by Stalin and taking advantage of their homeground advantage. Dressed in all white snow-suits, Finnish snipers and ski-troops could get around the battlefield nearly invisible, and by using petrol bombs (Newly christened molotov cocktails) were more than capable of destroying entire Soviet tank columns by hurling the cocktails either into the commanders hatch or onto the engine deck. By the end of the war, Finland had suffered 70,000 casualties and finished with more tanks than when the war had started, the soviets on the other hand were humiliated, losing up to 5 times that number, and deep severe wounds to their pride.
