Copybooks were workbooks British children would use to improve their handwriting. They had little phrases at the top that would be copied down the page as practice. These phrases were frequently bits of folk wisdom, such as "A penny saved is a penny earned" or "Honesty is the best policy" or "Better safe than sorry."

This poem is a succinct and beautiful expression of why, I fear, we are in grave danger today. But maybe, just maybe, we can turn back before the lights go out again.
