This video talks about akkermansia muciniphila, a type of good bacteria found in your large intestine. Discovered in 2004, it has gotten a lot of press for its association with leanness and general health. Our gut microbiome consists of viruses, yeasts and bacteria that support the health of our body and mind. Akkermansia is a good bacteria that is encouraged to grow with inulin from asparagus as well as many other high polyphenol-rich vegetables. Akkermansia muciniphila loves to chomp on the mucus lining of the gut. Quite the opposite of wearing it down, this chomping encourages the cells to make more, strengthening the layer more and more (sealing the leaky gut and modulating the immune system for people with autoimmune conditions). Akkermansia also produces nutrients that feed our other good gut bacteria. Oily, fatty fish like sardines, mackerel, herring, salmon, trout, anchovies, swordfish and tuna (careful with mercury) also help promote a. muciniphila. Abundance of this good bacteria decreases with diets high in alcohol and saturated fat (beef, cheese). More veggies and fish, less dairy, grains and moderate meat. Good luck. May you sleep well.
