Haydn completed this symphony in 1768 while in service at the court of Esterházy prince Nikolaus I. The name ‘La passione’ was not given by Haydn, and mostly likely originated in 1790 due the overall sombre but passionate nature of the work being similar to a character from the popular play ‘La jeune indienne’ by French playwright Nicolas Chamfort.

The work is comprised of four movements:
I. Adagio
II. Allegro di molto
III. Menuet e Trio
IV. Presto
