Hermann Kelly debates the Green Party's Patrick Costello on immigration, housing and carbon tax
The leader of the Irish Freedom Party, Hermann Kelly, debates Green Party Councillor Patrick Costello on immigration, housing, carbon tax and the EU. Kelly is running in EU election for Dublin and Costello is running in the local election in Kimmage-Rathmines, both occurring on May the 24th.
Kelly believes that uncontrolled immigration is a major contribution to the housing crisis in Ireland:
"Surely it should be Irish people who get a house first before someone just gets on a plane, comes to Ireland, gets on the social housing list and then demands a house?
"At the minute because of EU membership and uncontrolled immigration, we cannot plan. We don't know how many people are coming here but we do know many Irish people are pushed down the social housing list."
But Costello disagrees and blames the government for not providing more housing:
"To say immigration is the cause of the housing crisis — I don't believe it is a major cause. I don't accept it is.
"Immigration is not the cause of our housing crisis. A failure to build houses and a failure to provide is our problem.
"To blame immigration instead of government failure to provide housing and government failure to invest in housing is just a complete misnomer."
