Currumbin Wildlife Hospital Performs Wing Implanting for Injured Birds

Innovative vets at the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital in Queensland have performed wing transplants on wild birds that have damaged their flight feathers. In this video, uploaded to Facebook on September 21, wildlife vet Michael Pyne attaches new feathers to an injured kookaburra. The sanctuary has a cold storage feather library freezer at the hospital, which holds more than 140 sets of feathers from a range of native birds. Each patient is matched to a donor with corresponding species, sex, age and size, and the sanctuary often sends feathers from their library to patients all around the country.
