orlared: Right to housing "unknown" for one in three families in emergency accommodation who are migrants (Ireland)
The Minister for Housing, Eoghan Murphy, told Pat Kenny that the right to housing for roughly a third of the families in emergency accommodation is "unknown" due to their current status being either from outside the EU or from certain EU countries. The Minister told Kenny he wouldn't be able to get them into "proper supports until their situation is clarified".
Eoghan Murphy: “There are a number of families in emergency accommodation — roughly one in three — and their rights to housing aren't known. So they're trapped in emergency accommodation because my first responsibility where a family is in difficulty is to get them into supports but I can't move a family into the housing system or into sustainable homes if they don't have rights for that.”
Pat Kenny: “What gives you rights?”
Eoghan Murphy: “Your status of whether you are or not an EU citizen. So we have people who are from outside the EU or from some EU countries who have different rights who we can't actually find the long-term supports for. The worry then I have is that we find them trapped in emergency accommodation and no matter what we do, we won't be able to get them into proper supports unless their situation is clarified.”
Pat Kenny: “But do they have the right to be here at all?”
Eoghan Murphy: “Well that's something we are working with the Dept of Justice to address. ”
