Don’t go down that road. So many dog trainers get hung up on their personal dog’s issues...the ones they just can’t seem to resolve no matter what they do. That’s because training your own dog is hard work. You have your heart working against everything that you KNOW deep down is logical. But it’s just so damn hard.
So then many trainers fall down that rabbit hole of “well, if I can’t even get my own dog to behave, how can I be expected to help others?” which is an extremely dangerous path to lead.
Regardless of what you can’t “fix” with your own dog, you still have the knowledge and the skill set to bring value to SO many owners who are struggling with less challenging issues. I.e.- pulling on the leash, crate training, counter surfing, jumping, etc.
You can help others. You can train dogs. Because when you take the emotions out of it, you know you are more than capable. Don’t ever base your skill set on your own dog’s behavior. At the end of the day, dog trainers are dog owners too, and we all struggle with the same things.
Just remember how many people you can help. Remember why you started. Remember that no matter how simple something may seem to you, it could make a huge impact on someone else’s life. Stop letting your personal struggles hold you back. Stop letting fear and judgement keep you small. You are valuable, and you can absolutely help both people and dogs who are struggling.
I get extremely emotional about these things because the amount of empathy I have for humans in humongous. I share your struggle and your pain. I have walked in your shoes, and I have experienced the same doubts before. I’m so passionate about what I do because I love helping people.
