This simple video describes the psychology behind the coercion to wearing masks.

People also willingly wear masks because they unquestioningly trust authority figures, e.g. Fauci and the CDC. They also think that the authority figure knows more than they do, and that the authority figure knows what they are doing and knows best. The person wearing the mask thinks that the authority figure is being honest, and is dispensing information that is for everyone's benefit, despite having not knowing the authority figure as a person, nor having read the science for themselves.

Last, what is most unfortunate is that people who wear masks 'to make others feel comfortable' have been manipulated and their good nature taken advantage of. what they are doing by wearing a mask is reinforcing others' fears of the continued existence of a threat, and reinforcing the erroneous belief that compliance is necessary when it is not.
