On July 23rd I climbed Mt. Katahdin. What was supposed to be the beginning of a long hike, ended shortly after. I hurt my foot coming off the mountain and rather regretfully, came home a few days later. I'll definitely return to the Appalachian Trail in a future year, in better shape and likely start in Harper's Ferry for a flip-flop hike so that I do not begin in an area that makes it difficult to 'ease into things'. I still had an incredibly time in Maine, and was met with some amazing scenery and great hospitatlity by the fine folks over at the AT Lodge in Millinocket where I shacked up and rested before and after Katahdin, and who served as my shuttle to places I needed to go.
I am very highly considering a thru-hike of the Tahoe Rim Trail, a 170 mile loop in Nevada and California that circles Lake Tahoe, the largest freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevadas. The TRT offers terrain that could be described as easier than southern Maine, better weather, and more stunning views.
