J.B. Priestley (1894 - 1984) wrote his short story "The Grey Ones" in 1953 and although when (rarely) encountered it is found categorised in the horror / ghost story genre, one might equally read it as an allegory for modern times. A similar theme is treated in John Carpenter's film "They Live" (1988), among many others.
