"…verification puts an end to the workings of truth. Truth, if it exists, is something to be fought over. Verification transforms it into a Fait Accompli (a thing that has already happened or been decided before those affected hear about it). We have moved from reality as principle and concept to the technical realization of the real and its performance…"
Warren Buffet uses his personal credibility to endorse the Gates Foundation and the CDC as the definitive authorities in addressing the pandemic. Buffet goes on to say that the pandemic will not be over by the summer—how does he know? Because of Buffet’s personal brand and status as a financial elite his endorsement and statements are a “verification” masquerading as truth. It is truth that the average viewers are expecting from the “credible” broadcast media outlet of CNBC and their elite guest. Instead, they experience Warren Buffet verifying:
1. that the authorities in this crisis are Bill Gates and the CDC
2. this pandemic is not going away by summer
The real is not based on truth but verification. It is performed.
"According to Baudrillard, what has happened in postmodern culture is that our society has become so reliant on models and maps that we have lost all contact with the real world that preceded the map. Reality itself has begun merely to imitate the model, which now precedes and determines the real world...
Baudrillard is not merely suggesting that postmodern culture is artificial, because the concept of artificiality still requires some sense of reality against which to recognize the artifice. His point, rather, is that we have lost all ability to make sense of the distinction between nature and artifice."**
