In this video, I give three proofs for the existence of a necessary substance. In future parts of this series, I will build upon this necessary entity until we get to something looking like the Christian God.
1. The De Ente Argument of Thomas Aquinas, which is a cosmological argument relying on the distinction between essence and existence. Thomas Aquinas argues that essences cannot provide existence, and so every essence with existence must receive it's existence from another existing thing. This creates an infinite regress unless you posit an entity that exists out of necessity, a necessary substance.
2. The second argument is one I came up with. It's a modal reformulation of St. Thomas Aquinas's argument from causality. Essentially, given that nothing cannot exist, it follows that something must exist. And that thing is either necessary or contingent. But, if it's contingent, it must receive it's existence from something else. To avoid an infinite regress, we must assume something exists out of necessity.
3. The third argument builds off of a paper written by Dr. Chad Vance, a philosophy professor at the college of William and Mary. Basically, possible worlds depend upon a general overlap of our world preceding their divergence from our world. This means there must have been a time when all possible worlds were identical, that is to say, that the state of affairs in those worlds existed necessarily. Thus a necessary substance must exist.
