Buttigieg's Husband On Being A Teacher: 'There's Just Something Magical About Working With Kids'
Chasten Buttigieg, husband of presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg explained why he became a school teacher. “There’s just something magical about working with kids and getting them to believe in themselves,” Chasten Buttigieg said in response to a question from host John Dickerson. “I just enjoy being in the classroom with them and asking them to think about the world a little bit differently, challenging them and getting them to believe in themselves,” said Chasten Buttigieg. During the interview, Dickerson asked Chasten Buttigieg: “How do you get a kid to believe in themself. I mean, is it a single moment?”
“For some kids, I mean it’s different for every kid, and for some kids it’s a long process, because they just don’t see it in themselves,” said Chasten Buttigiegt. “So trying to peel away at all of those thing they’re telling themselves,” said Chasten Buttigieg. “And for some kids it’s as simple as saying, you’re loved and you’re cared about and this is a safe place for you to be, and I love having you here. And watching them beam with happiness that someone finally told them: you matter. It can be as simple as that. And that is the best thing about teaching, is that you are surrounded by sometimes hundreds of kids who are all bringing different things to the table, and you have to figure out what it will take to get them to believe in themselves.”
According to USA Today, Chasten Buttigieg has taken a leave from his teaching job to campaign with his husband. “Chasten Buttigieg has been a teacher at Montessori Academy at Edison Lakes in Mishawaka, Indiana, since 2017,” USA Today reported on April 9 of this year. “He taught humanities and drama before taking leave to join his husband on the campaign trail.” Buttigieg is currently leading in the latest polls in both the Iowa caucus and the New Hampshire primary. In Iowa, an Iowa State University poll conducted December 12-16 shows Buttigieg with 24 percent followed by Sanders with 21 percent, Warren with 18 percent and Biden with 15 percent. In New Hampshire, a WBUR poll conducted December 3-8 shows Buttigieg with 18 percent, Biden with 17 percent, Sanders with 15 percent and Warren with 12 percent.
