Professor of Genetics at Trinity, Aoife Mc Lysaght joined The Tommy Tiernan Show last night to discuss her research into DNA and genetics. Tiernan put it to Lysaght that racism is the "daftest thing" in terms of people's DNA being so similar.
Lysaght agreed and said racism "was absolutely the daftest thing" as "we are all so closely related to each-other".
"There's all kind of differences but the fact that people hang up on a few superficial differences — it couldn't be more superficial than skin colour — and so it's just a difference you can see."
Tienanmen asked about projections for the future for our species and Lysaght replied:
"One thing we do see for our species and part of why racism is kind of a nonsense is that we've really been constantly mixing.
"So what we see today in the things that people think are big fixed differences today, it's just one snap-shot on a constantly mixing thing, and so we can anticipate we'll keep mixing like this and so we'll just keep changing.
"It's like someone is stirring a big cake-mix or something...a big pot of people being mixed."
