Beethoven completed this piano concerto in 1795, with the premiere performance being given in December the same year at a public concert in Vienna. The work was dedicated to a student of his, Princess Anna Louise Barbara Odescalchi of Bratislava. While this was not the first time Beethoven composed a Piano concerto, it would be the first to be published and performed.

The work is comprised of three movements:
I. Allegro con brio
II. Largo
III. Rondo. Allegro scherzando
