Black Lives Matter Make A New demand: “Full removal of the School Resource Officer Program”
By: CIJ News
Black Lives Matter – Toronto (BLM-TO) reported on May 2, 2017 that “The Black Student Achievement Advisory Committee put forward 6 new recommendations last night including the the full removal of the School Resource Officer Program.”
At its meeting on 20 June 2016 the The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) approved the establishment of a Black Student Achievement Advisory Committee (BSAAC) with the mandate to “examine and make recommendations on strategies to create more equitable outcomes, raise achievement levels and create safe spaces for Black students.” The BSAAC was authorized to “support the Board’s ongoing commitment to work in partnership with its parents/guardians, communities and students to improve educational outcomes for Black students.”
The School Resource Officer program is an initiative to “improve safety (real and perceived) in and around public schools, improve the perception of the police amongst youth in the community and improve the relationship between students and police.”
According to Public Safety Canada, The School Resource Officer program is a partnership between the Toronto District School Board, the Toronto Catholic District School Board and the Toronto Police Service.
School Resource Officers work in partnership with students, teachers, school administrators, school boards, parents, other police officers and the community to establish and maintain a healthy and safe school community.
The School Resource Officer program began in 2008 with 30 officers assigned to 30 Toronto high schools. By the 2010/11 school year, 46 schools were participating.
