Nicotine is considered a parasympathetic alkaloid derived from nightshade plants (Solanaceae). It acts as a stimulant drug, speeding up activity in the central nervous system and brain, giving people increased physical and mental energy. There are a couple of exceptions to its nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonism, specifically at the Alpha-9 and Alpha-10 nAChR receptors, where it functions as an antagonist.
