Brahms completed this sonata in 1879, with the premiere performance being given in November the same year in Bonn. The name ‘Rain Sonata’ comes from the fact that this sonata references motifs in the song ‘Regenlied’ (rain song) also composed by Brahms.

This sonata is comprised of three movements:
I. Vivace ma non troppo
II. Adagio
III. Allegro molto moderato
