Rachmaninoff completed this sonata for cello and piano in 1901, with the premiere performance being given the same year in Moscow. The work was dedicated to Russian cellist Anatoliy Brandukov who played the cello at the premiere performance. In this sonata, Rachmaninoff allows the piano to introduce and develop most themes with the cello taking some for additional exposition. This results in both piano and cello taking equal importance in the music.

This sonata is comprised of four movements:
I. Lento – Allegro moderato
II. Allegro scherzando
III. Andante
IV. Allegro mosso
