Morning in Tauranga Wed 19th April 2000
Leave Tauranga at 8-05 a.m. We travel soon through Wairoa Pa, then to Omokoroa, and Apata. Then we head into the Kaimai Rail Tunnel under Mt. Ngatamahinerua. This is the longest tunnel in the Southern Hemisphere at five and a half miles. If we were to take this train all the way back to Auckland it would pass over 71 bridges, but we are only going as far as Hamilton and will probably go over some of the most spectacular in this part of its run. We have already been over the others on the run a few days ago from Auckland to Hamilton!
After we emerge from the tunnel the train turns southwest for Waharoa, Tamihana and Walton - small towns on the way. Then it runs alon the banks of the Piako River before arriving in Morrinsville.
