SHOPPING WHILE BLACK

V. Dewayne shops at the Walgreens on the corner of Irving Park and Kedzie in Chicago almost every night. This week, Walgreens gave him an unpleasant reminder of one of the reasons that we should always buy Black. Within 8 minutes of arriving and looking for what he wanted to buy, the police showed up and told him he had to leave. Dewayne confronted the man who called the police to get to the bottom of it. The only explanation he had for calling the police was that Dewayne was looking “suspicious.” Hmm… What was it about Dewayne that was so suspicious? Maybe it was the way he walked. Maybe it was what he was wearing. Or maybe it was because he’s a Black man. Which could it be? After getting someone else to confirm that he shops there all the time, the man backed off his request for Dewayne to be thrown out.

One unique thing Dewayne did in this situation was asking the police to give the worker advice. In our opinion, this is a nice move. The police really have no reason to offer any advice, but they obliged, which makes it seem as though they are taking Dewayne’s side. That has social capital in the moment. Secondly, it sets up almost an adult/child dynamic between the police and the worker. The officer didn’t offer great advice, but being the recipient of advice in a situation like that has an emotional impact. As that worker remembers what happened, he will probably feel embarrassed and cringe. Hopefully, that will have him thinking twice next time he wants to racially profile somebody.
