Protecting the citizens of Marion County
The Sheriff’s Office provides law enforcement services for the people of Indianapolis and Marion County. This includes managing county’s jails and prisoners, managing the 911 emergency dispatch center, securing all county government facilities, serving criminal warrants, serving and enforcing court orders, executing property sales, and more.
Sheriff Kerry J. Forestal
Kerry Joseph Forestal was elected as Marion County Sheriff in November of 2018. As Sheriff, he has the responsibility of leading the Marion County Sheriff's Office, which consists of over 800 employees; 428 Sworn Deputies, 56 Detention Deputies, and 327 civilians. The Marion County Sheriff is responsible for three Marion County jail facilities, which house an average daily population of 2,500 inmates. The Sheriff’s Office is divided into six Divisions; Jail, Criminal, Judicial Enforcement, Administrative, Reserve, and Communications and Homeland Security. The Sheriff is also responsible for the management of an annual budget of more than $120 million.
Sheriff Forestal grew up on Indianapolis’ East Side. After graduating from Scecina Memorial High School, and studying Criminal Justice at Ball State University and IUPUI, he joined the Marion County Sheriff’s Department in 1977.
Over the course of four decades at the Marion County Sheriff’s Department, Sheriff Forestal rose through the ranks of Detective in Undercover Narcotics; Sergeant in the White Collar Crime section and the Homicide and Robbery section; Lieutenant in East District Burglary and Auto Theft; and Captain, overseeing county-wide Property Crimes Investigations. In 2003, Sheriff Forestal was appointed Colonel and Chief Deputy of the Marion County Sheriff’s Department by Sheriff Frank Anderson.
In 2010, Sheriff Forestal was appointed by President Barack Obama, with the advice and consent of the United States Senate, to the position of United States Marshal for the Southern District of Indiana. In that role, his responsibilities included security over four federal courthouses (Indianapolis, Evansville, New Albany and Terre Haute); coordination of warrant service and arrests by federal agencies; responsibility of protecting federal judges in the Southern District of Indiana; and operational direction of the United State’s execution site at the Federal Correctional Institution in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Sheriff Forestal also served as the United States Marshal Service representative to the Homeland Security Committee of the International Chiefs of Police Association, the FBI-led Joint Terrorism Task Force and the United States Attorney-led High Intensity Drug Task Force.
In 2015, Sheriff Forestal returned to the Marion County Sheriff's Office, and was appointed by Sheriff John Layton to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and Executive Officer, overseeing the Criminal Division, until his election as Marion County Sheriff.
Sheriff Forestal married his high school sweetheart, Kathy (Naughton), in 1978. They have three children, Adam, Erik, and Brittany, and eight grandchildren.
