Dvořák likely completed this symphony in 1873, with the premiere performance being given in March of 1874 in Prague with fellow composer Smetana conducting. At the time of composition, Dvořák was a violinist in the orchestra of the Provisional Theatre in Prague. In this role, Dvořák would perform several works by the composer Richard Wagner, with the influence of Wagner being seen in several of Dvorak’s’ compositions, in particular his symphonies.

This work is comprised of three movements:
I. Allegro moderato
II. Adagio molto, tempo di marcia
III. Allegro vivace
