Jason Tartt and Donnie and Ventriss Hairston are suing McDowell County and two of their deputies for racial profiling and violation of civil rights. On August 7th, 2020, Dalton Martin and Jordan Horn claimed to be investigating 4 marijuana plants growing on the property of an abandoned church. They decided it would be a great idea to target an elderly Black couple and interrogate them about the plants. Seeing the police presence, Tartt walked over to see what was going on. Martin and Horn were treating the elderly couple like suspects, and upon his arrival, did the same to him. When Tartt refused to bend his knee to the detectives’ whims, they retaliated and arrested him. Likely feeling guilty for their illegal arrest, they commanded that Donnie and Ventriss Hairston go inside, going as far as pushing them and closing the door. Tartt maintained his innocence and went to court to defend himself, but the detectives didn’t even show up, so the charges were dropped. It looks like they didn’t want to be talking about this under oath.

No worries, they’ll get their chance again, cuz the three victims of racial profiling are suing. Can’t wait to see how these cops try to argue that they were justified to arrest a man on his own property for not showing identification for their bogus investigation into 4 marijuana plants growing amongst the weeds on an unrelated property.
