Piano Trio in D major, Op. 70, No. 1 “Ghost” by Ludwig van Beethoven
Beethoven completed a pair of pair of piano trios in 1808 while staying at the estate of Countess Marie von Erdödy. The Countess would be a close friend and supporter of Beethoven, with some music historians suggesting that the ‘Immortal Beloved’ that Beethoven refers to in his correspondence of that time period referring to Marie von Erdödy, though this is not confirmed.
The nickname “Ghost” is due to a pupil of Beethoven, Carl Czerny, who commented that the second movement of the first trio in this pair being particularly eerie and reminiscent of the ghostly opening scene in the Shakespeare play ‘Hamlet’.
This trio is comprised of three movements:
I. Allegro vivace e con brio
II. Largo assai ed espressivo
III. Presto
