'No Farmers = No food'.
Since Friday, this text has been depicted on a large inverted flag on a wall of the quay in front of the town hall of Almelo, supplemented with a grass base, vegetables and a tractor. If it's up to the municipality of Almelo, it won't be there for long. It must be gone by Tuesday, because according to the municipality, the wall is intended for artistic expressions and not for politically sensitive subjects.
The Dutch farmers do not agree and therefore decide to hold a demonstration at this mural in Almelo on Monday 1 August.
The atmosphere was grim and videos quickly circulated on social media showing police using excessive force against apparently peaceful protesters.
It is also remarkable that the minister responsible for the nitrogen policy (read: expropriation policy) is on holiday to a tropical island while there are demonstrations everywhere against her policy. (Christianne van der Wal)
The inverted Dutch flag is a symbol of the farmers that you encounter everywhere in the Netherlands and the government is not happy with that.
