Spanish Soldier 'Dies After AstraZeneca Vaccine' - Minister

A soldier died from a blood clot after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine, the Spanish defence minister Margarita Robles said on Monday (May 3).
"The medical reports we have been given seem to show that there is no doubt that the cause (of the soldier's death) was the administration of the vaccine," added Robles during a visit to the barracks where the solider served.
Named by the Spanish media as Francisco Perez Benitez, he was a member of an infantry regiment, stationed at the Aizoain barracks in Navarre, in northern Spain.
Perez, 35, died on April. 23 after receiving the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine on April 7, according to local media.
During the visit to the army barracks, Robles said despite the death the public should continue to be vaccinated as it was safe.
A spokesman for AstraZeneca declined to comment on individual cases.
However, in a statement last month the company said: "The UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and European Medicines Agency (EMA) completed their assessment of extremely rare blood clotting events with low platelets from over 34 million people vaccinated with AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine in the UK and EU."
