RICHARD SMOLEY - G. GURDJIEFF: WAKING FROM THE SLEEP OF DAILY LIFE
Presented on May 24, 2012: 'Am I asleep? Many people have found themselves asking this question. The great spiritual teacher G. I. Gurdjieff said that human beings actually are asleep in day-to-day life, and that we habitually walk around in a low-grade hypnotic stupor. What is the nature of this waking sleep, and what is the way out of it?'

From Theosophical Classics:
J.G. Bennett said in 1971:
"1971-2020: the next fifty years. You and your children will live through the most difficult period of history.. What are you doing to prepare yourself and them?"
"To replace all negative attitudes towards the existing world by a feeling of confidence and love towards the new world which is being born, towards the still unborn child that is the future mankind, to arouse in oneself constantly this love of the future humanity. Every time one observes in oneself some kind of negative attitude, to take this as the reminder that we human beings live on this Earth in order to serve and particularly to serve the future, and to serve with love, with hope, with confidence that it is possible for mankind to be born again."
~ JG Bennett Talk (1972)
BOOK, DEEPER MAN:
(J.G. Bennett taught the fourth way)
"So long as a man is not horrified at himself he knows nothing about himself.."
~ G. Gurdijeff
WAKING UP a la Gurdjieff
Thumbnail art: Mount Teide's shadow: the largest in the world over the sea:
"Did you know that Mount Teide’s shadow is the biggest shadow projected on the sea in the world? Mount Teide is the highest peak in Spain with 3718 m of altitude. We say peak instead of mountain because, as you know, Mount Teide is a volcano and not a normal mountain! There are plenty of other high peaks on earth that project shadows by the sunset, but none of them are so close to the sea.
The condition of island, added to the proximity of the sea and the extreme inclination of Tenerife, makes the shadow that Volcano Teide projects by sunrise and sunset the biggest in the world. This marvellous effect can be contemplated from the peak of Mount Teide by dawn and twilight. His shadow travels slowly covering part of the sea and even setting into partial gloom the neighbour islands."
"One needs fire. Without fire, there will never be anything. This fire is suffering, intentional suffering, without which it is impossible to create anything. One must prepare, must know what will make one suffer and when it is there, make use of it. Only you can prepare, only you know what makes you suffer, makes the fire which cooks, cements, crystallizes.. Suffer by your defects, in your pride, in your egoism. Remind yourself of the aim."
