Distressed Haitian mother pleads for her son in the midst of a riot.
Hundreds of Haitian and African migrants rioted at an immigration shelter in South Mexico in their attempt to escape. In order to contain the spread of uprising, police and National Guard had to initiate a lockdown of the migrant center. In the thick of the chaos, a local broadcaster filmed a Haitian mother begging for help for her 5-year-old sick child. According to her, they’ve been confined in the shelter for 10 days without food, water and the necessary medicine.
Since late 2018, the Mexican government has had to deal with a huge influx of migrants from Cuba, Haiti and Africa, who usually cross the southern Guatemalan border to get in. Recently, Mexico announced that it will be dispatching 6,000 soldiers to its crossing with Guatemala and 15,000 more to its northern border.
