WTF...Barry the MBU Puffer
WTF...Barry the MBU Puffer
We all see lots of viral cat and dog videos all over Social Media. I may have just found the aquatic version. Meet Barry the Puffer. I’ve never seen a fish so responsive to the world outside his or her tanks. Check this out!
The MBU puffer, AKA giant puffer or giant freshwater puffer, is one of 30 freshwater species of puffer and native to Cameroon, Zambia, Tanzania, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, specifically the east coast of Lake Tanganyika close to the mouth of the Malagarasi River and the mid to lower sections of the Congo River.

They grow to an adult length of 67 cm (26 inches). Like all of its relatives, the Mbu puffer is capable of inflating itself with water or air when stressed or otherwise frightened. It feeds on smaller fish, mollusks and crustaceans, and snails. Species kept in captivity require a varied diet consisting of shelled foods to help ensure good health and to prevent tooth overgrowth.
The Mbu puffer is just about the most aggressive tetraodon that you can find. However, these fish do learn to recognize and interact well with their owners. If an owner does decide to risk introducing tankmates with the puffers, you will need a massive tank, and the species you choose to share the environment must be sufficiently fast and agile to be able to outswim the puffer.
