A less known Landsknechtlied, originated from the German youth movement, words and music: author unknown. The song is about a mercenary who reports about his experiences in the peasant war. The text comes from several sources that have been documented since the beginning of the 20th century. The song is believed to be derived from contemporary texts from the 16th century. Georg von Frundsberg (1453-1528), mentioned in the second stanza, was a knight and imperial field captain under Emperor Maximilian II and Charles V. He introduced the mercenaries to the empire and achieved tremendous successes with them, including against King Francis I of France. The “lost troop” mentioned in the last stanza describes a kind of vanguard of the Landsknecht formation (Gevierthaufen), who fought in the front row and therefore had less chance of survival than the other ones. Because of their higher risk, they received more pay than the others (sometimes double or triple pay).

Das nahm ein schlecht Gelingen;
Schenkt Roten ein, schenkt Weißen ein
So will ich das Lied euch singen.
Dem Frundsberg sind wir nachgerannt,
ihm haben wir geschworen.
Da hat der Fähnrich Ehr´ und Hand
Im Kampf um die Fahne verloren.
Drum trinken wir heut’ den letzten Wein
Und würfeln zum letzten Male.
Wir wollen die verlorene Rotte sein
Und harren der Sturmsignale.
English translation:
The peasants wanted to be free
That took a bad turn;
Pour red wine, pour white one
So I want to sing this song to you.
We followed Frundsberg,
we have sworn to him.
Then the standard bearer has honor and a hand
Lost in the battle for the flag.
That's why we're drinking the last wine today
And roll dice for the last time.
We want to be the lost troop
And wait for the storm signals.
