Air and Variations by Gustav Holst

This short work for oboe, two violin, viola and cello was completed in 1894. Holst was only 20 years old at the time and studying at the Royal College of Music. Holst had originally enrolled in 1893 and had hoped to be awarded a scholarship to assist with tuition, but that year the scholarship was given to Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. As such, Holst borrowed money from friends and became renown for his frugal behaviour.

He would eventually win the scholarship in 1895, but would continue his cautious use of money throughout his life.
