Official anthem of the Free State of Bavaria since 1966. The melody was composed by Konrad Max Kunz in 1860. The text was written by Michael Öchsner. In 1948, the Bavarian poet Joseph Maria Lutz wrote a new version of the anthem in accordance with a decision by the Bavarian Party executive committee. The Bavarian Party advocated the independence of Bavaria, rejected Bavaria's accession to the Federal Republic of Germany, and therefore had all Bavarian references to Germany deleted from the anthem.
In an announcement dated July 29, 1966, Prime Minister Alfons Goppel recommended using the Lutz version as the text, which led to disputes between Öchsner supporters and the proponents of the Lutz version for years. Prime Minister Franz Josef Strauss ended the quarrels by stating that the first two stanzas of the Öchsner version (for learning in schools and for use in Bavarian radio) adopted by the state parliament and government in 1952/1953 continue to apply. That had already been decided on November 11, 1952 in the cultural policy committee of the Bavarian state parliament.
Gott mit dir, du Land der Bayern,
deutsche Erde, Vaterland!
Über deinen weiten Gauen
ruhe Seine Segenshand!
Er behüte deine Fluren,
schirme deiner Städte Bau
Und erhalte dir die Farben
Deines Himmels, weiß und blau!
Gott mit dir, dem Bayernvolke,
daß wir, uns’rer Väter wert,
fest in Eintracht und in Frieden
bauen uns’res Glückes Herd!
Daß mit Deutschlands Bruderstämmen
einig uns ein jeder schau
und den alten Ruhm bewähre
unser Banner, weiß und blau!
