Mozart completed this symphony in 1772 at the age of 16. Evidence on the original manuscript suggests the work may have been completed for a religious occasion, with the likely occasion being the ordination of the new Archbishop of Salzburg, Hieronymus von Colloredo. While Colloredo would be a patron of both Leopold Mozart and Wolfgang, the relationship between Colloredo and the young Mozart would only become worse until Mozart left Salzburg for Vienna.

This symphony is comprised of four movements:
I. Allegro
II. Andante
III. Menuetto and Trio
IV. Presto
