Lime sulphur can be a common item in some bonsai tool kits with 250 or more years of history. What is it and what it does it do?

Lime sulphur (CaS) which become Sulphur Dioxide (SO2). As a result of the reducing reaction the lime sulphur becomes sulphur Dioxide; a bleach, or more accurately a bleaching agent. This removes the colour from your tree.

This sulphur is also why it smells terrible.

Along with bleaching the tree it can also help in preserving the trunk by killing off the mould and fungi which would cause wood to rot. For this reason lime sulphur is also used as wood preserver in some bonsai.
