Der Michel - Der Mai ist gekommen - German Folk Song + English Translation
A spring and hiking song, based on a poem by Emanuel Geibel from 1841. Set to music by Justus Wilhelm Lyra in 1842. Due to the musical notation by Friedrich Silcher, the song was and is still popular with many choirs today.
6. O Wandern, o Wandern, du freie Burschenlust!
Da wehet Gottes Odem so frisch in die Brust;
English Translation:
1. May has come, the trees are sprouting,
Whoever feels like it may stay at home with worries.
Like the clouds move at the firmament,
this is how my mind is longing for the wide, wide world.
2. Mr. Father, Mrs. Mother, may God protect you!
Who knows where in the distance my luck will unfold!
There are so many streets that I never marched upon
There are many wines that I still haven't tasted yet.
3. So let's go, so let's go, in the bright sunlight
Over the mountains, through the deep valley!
The springs sound, all the trees rustle,
my heart is like a lark and joins in the tune.
4. And in the evening in the little town I arrive thirsty:
"Mr. Innkeeper, a jug of pure wine!
Take hold of the fiddle, you cheerful musician,
The song of my darling I sing along with you."
5. And if I find no inn, I'll lie down at night
Under a blue sky, the stars keep watch:
The linden tree in the wind, it rustles me softly into sleep,
In the morning kisses me the dawn awake.
6. Oh hiking, oh hikinging, you are free fellows' delight!
There God' breath blows so freshly into the chest;
there sings and cheers the heart to the firmament:
How beautiful you are, oh you wide, wide world!
