During the first Judeo-Roman war, a sect of Jewish rebels called the Sicarii held the fortress of Masada. Taking their name from the daggers each carried, the Sicarii were religious zealots who had been opposed to Roman rule of Judea for years and had armed up to prepare for the revolt. When the war came, the several hundred Sicarii fortified Masada, which would stand for longer than any other Jewish held fort in the war. When the siege finally came, they held out for 3 years. The Romans, unable to breach the walls instead chose to build a gigantic earthen ramp to climb over them. According to legend, when the Romans finally climbed over the walls, they found 960 dead, the rabid zealot defenders of the fortress had committed mass suicide.
