Are House Demolitions Effective Punishment for Terrorists? (Israel)
NEWS DESK | After a lengthy court battle, the I.D.F. Duvdevan unit helped demolish the house of a Palestinian terrorist who killed a soldier from their unit back in May. Is this longstanding strategy effective in preventing future attacks? Alec Pollard has the story.
Story:
A large-scale operation by the Israel Defense Forces (I.D.F.) was underway around Ramallah early Saturday, i24NEWS reports. Around 300 troops stormed the al-Amari refugee camp to demolish the house of 32-year-old Islam Yousef Abu Hamid, a Palestinian convicted of killing an Israeli soldier earlier this year, an i24NEWS contributor at the scene said.
Israel has stepped up operations in the West Bank in response to an attack Thursday that killed two soldiers in the vicinity of Ofra, in what appeared to be a copycat of last Sunday's attack that killed the fetus of a woman in advanced pregnancy while injuring seven others from the Jewish settlement. The I.D.F. blew up the floor of the building where Hamid family resides. Given the close living quarters of the camp's residents, the I.D.F. had to cordon off much of the area to perform the demolition. The adjacent town of al-Bireh was also sealed off.
