Chopin completed this in 1839 while living at the manor of George Sand in Nohant, central France. The work was not initially well received by critics in 1840, however the public had considerable admiration for the work and it has since become of the most recognisable Chopin compositions.

The work is comprised of four movements:
I. Grave – Doppio movimento
II. Scherzo
III. Marche funèbre: Lento
IV. Finale: Presto
