Herman’s Hermits’ chart-topping 1965 U.S. was a descendant of this old British music hall song, originally popularized by Cockney comedian Harry Champion, who recorded it on several occasions (hopefully the track heard here was, in fact, the first one….but no guarantees, as specific dates for all of the various versions aren’t available). The Hermits arrangement was more directly inspired by the 1961 recording of “I’m Henery The Eighth I Am” by UK entertainer Joe Brown
