Since the work of Rachel Carson, 'silent spring', many dangerous chemicals have been banned from use, but mostly they were just shifted in other directions as we all know. One half of agent orange, spike 24d is still used to this day to kill woody species, without the understanding that's it's also destroying critical soil biology that is the real key to water retention. Well, you get my point, the list of chemicals was too long for this talk, but here's one that I think is pretty nasty.
